On Thursday, September 17, at 4:30pm, the Buckley Institute is pleased to host Cardinal Timothy Dolan for a presentation titled "Keeping the Faith: Religion in Modern American Life."
Religion has long played a central role in shaping American culture, institutions, and public life. Few figures embodied that influence more fully than Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen: a pioneering televangelist, best-selling author, and public intellectual whose message reached millions of Americans across religious and political lines. At a time when questions about the place of faith in the public square remain as pressing as ever, Sheen's life offers an opportunity to reflect on religion's enduring significance in American society.
As Archbishop Sheen is beatified this September, Cardinal Timothy Dolan will reflect on Sheen's remarkable legacy and consider what it reveals about the role of religion in modern America. Drawing on Sheen's example, Cardinal Dolan will explore why faith continues to matter in a pluralistic society and consider the challenges and opportunities facing religious life in the 21st century.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan is Archbishop Emeritus of New York, having served from 2009 to 2025. Previously, he was Archbishop of Milwaukee and Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis. He was appointed to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. Cardinal Dolan has served in parish ministry, academia, and Church leadership in both the United States and Rome, including as rector of the Pontifical North American College. He has also served as president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and chaired the Bishop's Committee on Pro-Life activities and the Bishops' Committee for Religious Liberty. He participated in the papal conclaves that elected Pope Francis in 2013 and Pope Leo XIV in 2025. Cardinal Dolan currently serves as a member of both the Dicastery for the Oriental Churches and the Dicastery for Evangelization, and remains active as cardinal, bishop, and priest.
