Over 1,100 Alumni, Students, and Faculty Call on Yale to Restore Open Elections

The Buckley Institute recently sent our petition calling for reform of the Yale Corporation’s Alumni Fellow Elections to Yale President Maurie McInnis and the members of the Yale Corporation with over 1,100 signatures.

The petition calls on the Yale Corporation to restore the petition candidate process, allow candidates for Alumni Fellow Elections to discuss their approach to Yale governance, and release the vote counts for Alumni Fellow Elections.

More than 1,100 alumni, students, and faculty endorsed the petition, including graduates of Yale College and every Yale graduate and professional school. In addition, alumni and future graduates from every year between 1951 and 2030 have signed the petition.

Yale took laudable steps in commissioning and accepting the Report of the Committee on Trust in Higher Education. In her response to the report, President McInnis acknowledged that “administrators do not have all the answers” and stated that Yale’s efforts to restore trust “will be done in close partnership with our faculty as well as our students, staff, and alumni.” The simple reforms outlined in our petition will help Yale earn back the trust of its alumni, a critical step in restoring the trust of the American public.
