Tom Hood ’69 Joins Buckley Institute Board

The Buckley Institute is pleased to announce that Thomas R. Hood ’69 was recently elected to its Board of Directors

“I am delighted to welcome Tom to the Buckley Institute’s Board of Directors,” noted Buckley Institute Founder and Executive Director Lauren Noble ’11. “He and his wife, Maren, are longtime supporters of the Buckley Institute and are extremely dedicated to revitalizing true intellectual diversity on Yale’s campus.”

“I look forward to working with Tom to advance free speech and the principles of a liberal education at Yale,” said Buckley Institute Board Chairman Roger Kimball. “His commitment to restoring the legacy and reputation of his alma mater will help the Buckley Institute reach new heights.”

Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Thomas R. Hood began his career as a tax partner in his hometown, first at the firm of Baird Holm and then Kutak Rock and Campbell. In 1990, Hood was appointed Counselor to the Internal Revenue Service Commissioner as part of the administration of President George H. W. Bush, serving in that capacity until 1993. He  was then Partner and Senior Counsel in the New York office of the Mayer Brown law firm until his recent retirement from practice. 

Tom Hood has been married to his wife, Maren, for 51 years, and has three sons and six grandchildren. In addition to his involvement with the Buckley Institute, Hood is an active supporter of the arts. He serves on the board of 54 Below, a NYC nonprofit cabaret and restaurant dedicated to preservation of Broadway, cabaret, jazz, and similar kinds of music, and is a patron of New York City’s City Center and Entertainment Community Fund. Hood is also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution’s New York chapter, and is an avid reader of American history. Hood received a B.A. from Yale University in 1969 and a J.D. from University of Minnesota Law School in 1973.
