Buckley Institute Founder and Executive Director Lauren Noble ’11 published an op-ed in RealClearEducation about our latest report on the faculty political imbalance at Yale

After examining some of the most relevant departments, including political science and history, and the law school, we found that 83% of Yale faculty are Democrats… By contrast, only 3.5% registered as or donated to Republicans. Just 13% had registered as unaffiliated.

We counteract the 23-to-1 ratio among the faculty with a different ratio: 1 in 10… At the end of the 2023 academic year, the Buckley Institute counted 623 student members, making up almost 10% of Yale’s 6,590 enrolled undergraduates.

Several students have remarked that knowing that many of their peers have joined an organization dedicated to free speech makes it easier to speak up in class. If students know that they are more likely to be sincerely argued with than canceled, they will be more willing to share and hear the best ideas, not just those that fit the campus orthodoxy.
